Cameras

For my primary camera system, I use Sony cameras, specifically the Sony A7R III.

I also use a second Sony A7R III that has undergone a Full Spectrum Conversion by Kolari Vision, allowing the camera to record light beyond the visible spectrum.

Alongside my Sony system, I also use:

• Fujifilm X100T — location scouting and point-and-shoot work

• Olympus TG-4 — underwater work

• Mamiya RZ67 — medium-format film

• Olympus OM-1 — 35mm film

• Hasselblad XPan II — panoramic 35mm film

My lens of choice is the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 G Master.

Lighting

I use almost exclusively Profoto lighting, primarily because of its build quality, flash duration, reliability and customer service.

My current lighting kit comprises:

I have also worked extensively with:

• Profoto B1

Modifiers

The bulk of my work is lit using either a Profoto Medium White Umbrella with Diffuser or the Profoto OCF 3' Octa, which is particularly useful because of its quick-opening design.

My other modifiers include:

• Profoto Zoom Reflector

• Profoto Clic Snoot

• Profoto Clic Barndoors

Cases & Transport

For my main camera bag, I switch between:

• Pelican 1535 Air

• Think Tank Airport International V3.0

Both have wheels, which becomes increasingly important once you're carrying camera equipment through airports and railway stations.

For larger equipment, I primarily use Pelican 1615 Air cases.

On location, the majority of my equipment is transported using a Rock-N-Roller cart.

Backdrops

I primarily shoot on location and generally avoid using backdrops.

When I do use them, I favour Gravity Backdrops medium hand-painted canvas backdrops.

For my Texas portrait series, I used an Extra Large Oliphant hand-painted canvas backdrop.

I also occasionally use Colorama 2.72 × 11m paper rolls in a variety of colours.

Computers, Devices & Software

My main computer is a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, used alongside an Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse.

Adobe

My primary software includes:

• Adobe Lightroom Classic

• Adobe Photoshop

• Adobe Premiere Pro

• Adobe Bridge

• Adobe Media Encoder

Tethering

For tethered shooting, I use:

• Capture One

• Tether Tools cables

• iWorkCase V3

Mobile

On the go, I use an Apple iPhone 13 Pro, with the following apps most regularly:

• Lightroom Mobile

• Darkroom

• FiLMiC / FILMM

Business

For general business administration and file management, I use:

• Xero

• Dropbox

• Google Workspace

Tripod

Tripods are an anathema to me.

However, when I am forced to use one, I use a Manfrotto 190XPRO aluminium four-section tripod.

Or whatever is closest.

Data Storage

I use a 3-2-1 backup system for my images and video. My archive currently contains approximately 38TB of material shot since 2008.

My storage workflow includes:

• LaCie 2TB Rugged portable hard drives

• SanDisk SD and SDHC cards with write speeds of at least 160MB/s

• Synology DS1522+ for cold storage

• Dropbox for cloud backup

Stands

I use C-stands for almost all assignments, with the occasional exception of nano stands where space or time is at a premium.

A useful rule learned through experience:

Do not put a £1,700 light on a £10 stand.

Filters

My filter kit includes:

• ND filters for the DJI Mini 3 Pro

• Kolari full-spectrum filters for my converted Sony A7R III

• A selection of step-up and step-down rings to deal with differing filter thread sizes
